Great leaders always test their organization’s trust environment by developing Trust, Environment, Sustainment, Techniques and establishing: Trust, Environment, Sustainment, Teams. Now you may be wondering what this has to do with securing your season tickets. The answer? Everything.
In order for your team to secure one of the most coveted trophies in professional sports, their leadership must relentlessly develop and test the team’s trust environment. No trust environment = no Vince Lombardi trophy. There are four elements that lead to successful outcomes. They are direction, determination, discipline, and diligence. The absence of any of these elements spell certain defeat, especially when building and maintaining successful team operations and execution.
The question that should be at the forefront of every coach’s mind is this, “What is the key asset that precipitates reaching our goal as a team?” Wise leaders practice what is known as “key asset identification.” Identifying the key asset is simply finding the one thing upon which everything else depends, the “center of gravity” if you will.
The center of gravity is the one thing that makes or breaks a team’s success. Once identified, smart leaders determine to protect that asset at all costs, to discipline themselves and their team members to strengthen that asset, and to be diligent to promote that asset daily - in every way possible. So, what is the center of gravity for team success? The answer is simple, trust!
Since trust is the center of gravity for a successful team, coaches (leaders) practice what I call the “LIFE” method as they seek to gain and maintain trust momentum. They are determined to look and listen for anything that may degrade or diminish the trust environment. They discipline themselves, and their team members, to identify and investigate the cause and effect of practices that are building or breaking trust. Finally, they are diligent to facilitate strengths and engage weaknesses in order to keep trust operating at its highest capacity.
I always invite leaders to test the trust environment much like one does when testing a pool’s chemical balance. Since there are so many variables that can create an imbalance, it is important to establish and develop “trust agents” that serve as members of an organization’s “Trust Environment Sustainment Team.” I refer to them as a “TEST” squad.
Wise coaches (leaders) task these squads with learning certain techniques, tactics and procedures that keep the trust environment strong, healthy and functioning at peak performance. With this in mind, it is time to test the waters and take the trust environment to its highest level of potential. How far will you go this season?
