Got Game?

The expressions "He’s got game" or "She’s got game" are highly regarded in the

realm of sports, irrespective of the specific sport being played. These phrases refer to

individuals whose expertise, proficiency, and capabilities are exceptionally impressive

and extraordinarily outstanding.

These people are set apart by choice, not by chance. They are principled and

purposeful in all they do. These remarkable people set themselves apart by deciding the

direction they will take and “GO” that way striving to become the best they can be at

what they do. Their desire to “KNOW” disciplines them to learn all they can about the

history, hallmarks, and the honorees who played the game. Their determination to

“GROW” drives them to analyze and execute certain tactics, techniques, and

procedures that enable or enhance their play of the game. Finally, the fruit of their

diligent labors always “SHOW” on the field of play because they bring their best to the

battle, every moment, every day.

I often wonder what would happen if we took those “expressions” mentioned

above and applied them in the leadership arena. What would people say about our

leadership practices? Could they honestly say, “He’s got game” or “She’s got game” as

a leader and could we be considered exceptionally impressive and extraordinarily

outstanding?

Authentic leaders can and are considered as such because their lives are

characterized by the traits of going, knowing, growing, and showing. These leaders live

well above the level of mediocre leadership. They willingly and intentionally put the

“extra” in the term extraordinary by transitioning from the simple “do as I say” type of

leadership to a “do as I do” style.

Authentic leaders enthusiastically give the extra time and effort necessary to

“lead” well by learning, embodying, and demonstrating the traits of authentic leadership

in everything they do. So, by chance, are you willing to make the hard choice to do

what’s necessary to be the authentic leaders each of you are capable of becoming? The

choice is up to you!
