It was definitely a strong coffee morning, and having made it

through a super busy, long day and night the day before, I just needed

something to kick start my mind and body in order to make it through

today. As I pulled up to order a powerful cup of go juice, a crisp happy

voice came over the intercom and said, “Welcome to today, may I take

your order!” I replied, “I’d like an order of what made you so spry and

joyful this morning.” She laughed and then I made my order.

I pulled forward to the window reaching out to hand her my

payment. She opened the window and said, “to answer your question

more fully, I choose to enjoy every day and every person I meet during

the day. It makes my day much more pleasant and meaningful.”

As she closed the window, I started thinking. I thought about her

comments and realized I should enjoy the day because I’ll never get to

see it again. Why waste the day mired in misery and moaning about

people, places, or things, when I own the wherewithal to enjoy it?

Why not be glad that I am in the day and make the choice to enjoy

those I get to meet, even the snobby ones, throughout the day. What

was interesting is that I found myself perking up even though I hadn’t

consumed any go juice up to that point. A genuine truth struck me at that

moment as I realized that authentic leaders find ways to perk themselves

up internally without having to be dependent on external sources. Talk

about being a “self-starter!”

At that moment, the young lady returned to the window to open it

and hand me my purchase. On the side of the cup it read, “Enjoy the

day!” I said to her, “thank you, I will.” I smiled and pulled away with a new

perspective captured in these words, “Make glad your heart before the

day starts, and enjoy your day before it gets away.” Today is your day,

so, what’s your perspective?
